Why was I charged twice? 5 common reasons

Short answer

Most "double charges" are a temporary pending hold sitting next to the final charge, and the hold drops off on its own within a few days. A real duplicate happens when a payment is submitted twice, usually because a card reader froze, a cashier retried the card, or an online checkout was clicked or refreshed twice. If both charges have posted, contact the merchant first, then your card issuer.

Skip the hassle next time. Scan your receipt with Dupe Detective before you leave the store. It takes a few seconds, and a double charge caught at the register is fixed on the spot.

1. A pending hold next to the final charge

This is the most common cause, and it isn't a real duplicate. When you pay, the merchant first asks your bank to hold an amount. Later it sends the final amount. For a few days you can see both.

It happens most at restaurants (the hold is for the bill before the tip), gas pumps, hotels and car rentals. The hold disappears once the final charge posts. How long pending charges take to drop off.

2. The card reader froze and the cashier ran it again

A terminal times out or shows an error, so the cashier asks you to tap again. Sometimes the first payment actually went through. You end up with two posted charges for the same amount, minutes apart.

3. You clicked Pay twice online

A slow checkout page, a double click, or a page refresh can submit the same order twice. Check your email for two order confirmations. If you only got one order, ask the merchant to refund the second charge.

4. An item was scanned twice at the register

This one won't show as two card charges. Your single charge is just bigger than it should be, and the extra item is only visible on the receipt. Look for the same product and price on two lines. How to get a refund for a double-scanned item.

5. A subscription billed twice

Signing up twice, or subscribing once in an app and once on the company's website, leads to two recurring charges. Check your Apple subscriptions in Settings and your email for both sign-ups, then cancel the extra one and ask for a refund.

How to tell which one you have

  • One charge is pending: wait a few business days. It's probably a hold.
  • Both have posted, same amount, minutes apart: a real duplicate payment.
  • One charge, but too high: check the receipt for a double-scanned item.
